The victim of a fatal shooting by police Monday (June 9) in Columbia and the Howard County Police officer who shot him have been identified, according to the Independent Investigation Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.

Michael McKee, a two-year veteran with the Howard County Police Department, fatally shot 23-year-old Micah Booker, the division said in a news release.

McKee has been placed on standard administrative leave, according to Sherry Llewellyn, Howard County Police director of public affairs.

Police were called to the 9200 block of Wilbur Court in Columbia at 7:24 p.m. Monday by a 26-year-old who said his younger brother stabbed him multiple times before fleeing the scene. Another 911 call was made shortly after by a man who said he had just stabbed a family member and that he was armed with several weapons near a bus stop at Oakland Mills Road near Carters Lane, the IID said in a news release.

Officers found Booker with a double-edged spear at the bus stop and ordered him to drop the weapon, the IID said. He refused to put down his weapon and approached an officer. As the officer backed away, he fired his weapon, according to the IID. Booker was declared dead at the scene.

Booker’s 26-year-old brother was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he is in critical condition. Police identified the brother as Samuel Louie Booker IV.

The IID, which investigates fatal police encounters or those likely to result in death, is leading the investigation.
